What is Eurythmy therapy?

The art of Eurythmy was created by philosopher Dr. Rudolf Steiner in the early 1900's. Soon after, Eurythmy was introduced to Waldorf education to aid the healthy development of children. Then, in collaboration with doctors, Eurythmy Therapy was developed.

Eurythmy Therapy meets the whole human being by addressing the physical body, the energetic body or life body, the emotional body, and the higher self. Eurythmy Therapy helps to harmonize these four components of the human being through gestures that make visible the sounds of speech and music, enlivened by imaginations.

The human being is created through movement come to rest. We are alive through the rhythmic beating of our hearts, and the breathing of our lungs. Our digestive organs are in constant motion, and intricately connected to our rhythms of sleeping and eating, habits, and emotions. And our emotions, in turn, affect our digestion as well as our rhythmic system. The whole of our being is connected and interwoven. In addition to the relationship of our internal functioning, our organs respond to the rhythms of the sun and the planets. We experience the breathing rhythms of the day in sleeping and waking and the rhythms of the week, month, and year through our physical functions and hormonal changes. We have movement in our thoughts and speak through the movement of our vocal cords, which allow us to express our inner life as well as descriptions of the world around us. Eurythmy takes all of these movements of the human being and makes them visible through gestures and movements in space.

Eurythmy Therapy creates harmony within the human being because the movements of Eurythmy are the movements of the human being made visible. Central to this are the elements of speech, namely, the vowels and consonants which are transformed into movement becoming visible speech. These conscious movements can be learned by all people who are interested in taking a step to participate in their own growth and healing.
